7:30 PM
Parish Center
An evening for re-freshing all Ministers of Communion of Holy Cross. All Ministers of Communion for Holy Cross are asked to attend one of these sessions.
At Holy Cross parish, Ministers of Communion at our Eucharistic liturgy
are chosen from among the many members involved in active parish
ministry. These are scheduled to minister approximately once a month.
The minister who regularly brings the Eucharist to the sick and
shut-ins makes arrangements with one of the parish staff who will give
instruction on the process for this aspect of the ministry. Likewise, a
person desiring to take communion to a sick family member on a
temporary basis, makes arrangements with one of the parish staff. The contact person for Ministers of Communion is Karen Henrichs. She can be reached at the parish office.
The role of a Minister of Communion is that of serving the people of God by assisting in the distribution of the Body and Blood of the Lord, both at our Eucharistic liturgy and in ministry to the sick and those confined to their homes.
Special talents or gifts needed for this ministry
Essential to this ministry is a great reverence and love for the Eucharist.
"In this ministry, you must be examples of Christian living in faith and conduct; you must strive to grow in holiness through this sacrament of unity and love."
(From the "Rite of Commissioning Special Ministers of Holy Communion.")
The role of Minister of Communion must be one of both being and giving the Body of Christ.
Duration of ministry
Each year, regularly scheduled Ministers of Communion (and substitutes) are asked to renew their commitment through a returned form distributed to them during the season of Lent. They participate in a special commissioning rite at the Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday. A new schedule is distributed usually in June of each year. Ministers are scheduled for a particular Eucharist on a specific Sunday of the month. Ministers are responsible for providing their own substitute, when necessay, from the list of names accompanying the schedule.
Rehearsal times or training sessions
The Eucharistic minister receives instructions from one of the parish staff. Participation in liturgical ministry training programs is expected when these are offered in the parish.
Expected dress requirements
As with all visible ministers at the Eucharist, dress should be one's "Sunday Best", and should be appropriate for the Eucharistic celebration. There is no specific dress code other than that which all ministers are expected to observe. Casual attire such as jeans, shorts of any kind, T-shirts, spaghetti strap or bare back dresses, are not considered suitable dress.
