Get Involved
One seeking to become a part of this
ministry may call the Director of Music, Katherine Evans, for an interview (very informal) or respond to the announcements in the August/September bulletins. If
you would like to contact Katherine, please call the parish office to express your interest in joining the HandbellChoir. Just leave a number where
you can be reached, along with a good time to call.
The Handbell Choir plays at one Mass each week on a rotating schedule and at other special functions in and outside the parish. Some of these functions have included weddings, Confirmation, St. Bernard's Institute graduation, Mass at Sacred Heart Cathedral and concerts. The Handbell Choir is a multigenerational group that encompasses beginner to advanced players.
Special talents or gifts needed for this ministry
The handbell choir is a "team" instrument and, therefore one needs to have a very strong commitment to the team. Beginners need not have music reading skills to start with, but those wishing to ring with the more advanced ringers must have strong music reading skills and a good sense of rhythm. Flexibility in schedule for weekend liturgies is crucial.
Duration of the ministry
A commitment of at least a full year is expected. One rehearsal (see below) and one Mass each weekend (Saturday or Sunday) on a rotating basis from September to June.
Rehearsal times or training sessions
Tuesday evenings from 6:45-8:30. There is an additional, as needed, rehearsal for beginners that starts at 6:15 to work on music reading and bell handling skills.
Expected dress requirements
Players need special gloves that can be ordered from the director. Except for concerts when the dress is black skirt or slacks with black blouse or shirt, there are no special requirements other than what is appropriate for attending Mass.
