Holy Cross Scholarships
for Catholic High School Students

There are four Memorial Scholarships that are open each year to students who have attended Holy Cross School and who are planning on attending a Catholic High School. The funds for three of these Scholarships are administered by the pastor of Holy Cross Parish. The Reverend John Patrick O'Malley Award Scholarship is administered by Bishop Kearney High School.

Margaret (Marge) Marie Chodak Streb Scholarship
The annual award is a minimum of $1,000 per year for each of the four years of high school. Any eighth grader from Holy Cross Parish and/or any eighth grader who is active in the Holy Cross Sports Program, who
desires to attend a Catholic high school, is eligible.

The following criteria is used to determine who should receive this Scholarship:
1. Each candidate must write a brief (one page) essay on why they believe they are qualified for this award and why they want to attend a Catholic high school. All essays must be sent to the Holy Cross Parish Office by February 12, 2010.

2. The student who is awarded the Scholarship should possess some of the same virtues as Marge including, but not limited to:
• A strong desire to achieve in school, in sports, or in other special interests
• A positive and spirit-filled life
• The ability to work with others

3. The award is for excellence in effort, determination, virtue, and team building.
The Selection Committee is made up of the Pastor of Holy Cross Parish, members from the CYO Athletic Board and Mr. Arthur Streb. Using information from the essay and input from the leadership of Holy Cross Parish, the Committee will choose one of the candidates to receive the Scholarship.

Because Marge was so involved in the Parish Sports Program, the award will be given at The Annual Holy Cross Sports Banquet each year.

Reverend John Patrick O'Malley
Award Scholarship

This Scholarship to Bishop Kearney High School is awarded to a Holy Cross School graduate in good academic standing who has best expressed through a written essay, his/her desire to be awarded the scholarship. The winner is announced along with the other Bishop Kearney High School scholarships.

Tom Roach Memorial Scholarship
Any Holy Cross Student involved in the Sports Program may apply for this scholarship to any Catholic high school. The Tom Roach Memorial Scholarship committee makes its selection based on essays submitted by those students possessing character qualities that were valued by Tom Roach - dedication, hard work, and loyalty to friends and teammates. The winner is announced at the Spring Sports Banquet.

Daniel Jerzak, Jr. Memorial Scholarship Fund
Any Holy Cross student with talents in the fine arts, music, or theater may apply for this scholarship to Aquinas. The Daniel Jerzak, Jr. Memorial Scholarship selection committee reviews an example of each applicant's creative talent and awards the scholarship at the Holy Cross School graduation ceremony.


Parish Scholarships
for Catholic Elementary School Students

There are four Memorial Scholarships that are awarded each year to Holy Cross Students in Catholic School. The funds for these Scholarships are administered by the pastor of Holy Cross parish.

Sharon Tartaglia Memorial Scholarship Fund
This fund was established to help provide tuition assistance to a Catholic School student from Holy Cross Parish on an annual basis.The students nominated should possess some of the same virtues as Sharon including, but not limited to: a vibrant, giving, loving personality; strong leadership skills; and a strong faith. The teachers and/or principal will nominate 3 students based on the criteria established above. The students will be asked to write a brief (one page) essay on why they would like the assistance and what their experience at Holy Cross School has meant to them. The Tartaglia and Mascari families will review the essays and select two children. The annual award will be a minimum of $500. The students will be identified by June 1st of each year and the award will be for the following school year.

The Mary Licata Memorial Scholarship
for Excellence in Effort and Determination

Awards from this endowment shall be made to one or more students by the pastor of Holy Cross Parish or his designee, in accordance with the established procedures for awarding this scholarship. Awards shall be for one academic year. This endowment shall be used to provide scholarships for students from Holy Cross Parish enrolled at Holy Cross School (or one of the Monroe County Catholic Schools). Their teachers and principal will nominate students showing both excellence in effort and determination. Based on these recommendations, the pastor of Holy Cross Parish shall choose a student for this scholarship. In June, the scholarship will be awarded for the following year at the closing of the school year prayer service. At present three scholarships for $1,000 are awarded each year.

Sister Eugene Pearson Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is in the memory of Sister Eugene Pearson, RSM, who taught for over 25 years at Holy Cross School. The teachers of Holy Cross School will nominate students who show a love for learning and a deep faith in God. Based on these recommendations, the principal and the pastor of Holy Cross Parish shall choose a student for this scholarship. The scholarship of $500 will be awarded for one year.

Sr Carolyn Knipper, RSM Memorial Scholarship                                                                                                The school and parish were always close to Sr Carolyn's heart, so this would be a fitting remembrance. Catholic School Education is a great gift. We thank all who make these scholarships available to our students. The scholarship of $500 will be awarded for one year.
